Happy Monday, my friends!
In today’s video, I’m bringing you along as I create a multi-functional flip-up writing space designed to add lots of extra journaling room without overwhelming the page. I love taking a simple idea and engineering it into something more intentional, functional, and meaningful — and this piece does exactly that.
I’m still working within the Rooted in Him and Moments in Time (Grandma’s Kitchen) journals, and this design fits beautifully into both. The base structure features a large hidden writing area tucked behind a bottom flip, along with a concealed pocket that holds journal cards and ephemera.
The finished piece measures 4 ¾ x 5 ½!
I also walk through three different closure options, each with its own benefits:
- Belly Band Closure (my favorite!)– This option allows the belly band to be glued directly to the journal page while keeping the ephemera piece removable, making writing easy and comfortable.
• Corner Tuck Closure – A lovely idea, though a bit trickier due to the bulk created by heavier paper and layered cards. Using lighter-weight paper can make this option more workable.
• Separate Pocket Option – Perfect if you prefer a cleaner page or want to reduce bulk while still keeping everything contained.
This project is all about choice, flexibility, and honoring the writing process — allowing your journal to work with you instead of against you.
