Video – Truth Box for My Granddaughter | Sunday’s ART of Truth | A Gift from the Heart
Sometimes the most unexpected color palettes hold the deepest healing.
Hello friends!
Welcome to Sunday’s ART of Truth — “A Gift from the Heart”
Wow! It has been months since I have done a Sunday’s ART of Truth. I have missed it so!Sunday’s ART of Truth has always been a space where I process life through layers of paper and paint. Today, it feels like coming home.
In today’s video, I am sharing a project I made for my granddaughter’s 15th birthday. Each year I make her a mixed media project. This year, I asked her what colors is enjoying these days. She said soft red, coral and light lavender. I was a bit taken aback but I believed I could create something with those colors. I knew that I wanted to make her a truth box this year. I selected a simple wood box with an unhinged lid.
If you have been around these parts for any length of time, you may know that when I do mixed media, my comfort zone and go to is always moody and grungy. I thought how in the world am I going to create something with her colors while still being about to add my signature style. I wanted to be able to add depth through texture and layers of paint and paper. I was nervous. Confounded. Completely outside my comfort zone. I didn’t give up and pushed through the discomfort of trying something new and trusted the process.
What I ended up with was perfectly perfect for her. It took me many days to really ‘see’ what I was seeing. To grasp what I had captured.
When I finished, I thought, “This feels childish… like cotton candy.”
And then I remembered sticky hands. Sweet cheeks. Cloud-like skies.
And I knew — it was exactly right.
As always, the layers of paper have meaning. Words used, quotes peeking through the layers, and magical texture were part of the story.
I always like to highlight different papers I used in construction because they are part of the story. I used some beautiful rose papers in her colors. I also used and can still see through the layers, a tiny postage stamp that reminds me of the hopes and the places she will go. The people that she will meet and the adventures she will have. I also chose the “she decided” paper which I use often in these meaningful projects. Additionally, I used one that I want to highlight here. It is just some typing on an old piece of aged school writing paper. This is what it says. It shows through on the front of the box.
“We are not perfect. We struggle. We are broken and blended. We are learning to love. We are finding the good. We are covered by GRACE. We are family”
While, typically Sunday’s ART of Truth is more about the healing that comes for me in the mixed media creative process and whatever truth inspired me, this is for Kenzie.
That being said, I will share just a bit about the reflections that occurred for me. When I think I Kenzie girl, I see a young lady who is sure of herself. I see a soul who is cared for in ways that I never was. I see her wrapped in the cocoon of her precious home and life and I offer up gratitude for her lovely life. Typically, when I look behind me, it is with 95% sadness and grief. This was different. I was seeing my life through the lens of hers and was overflowing with gratitude for what she has. Jesus is healing me every day with every breath, and I am equally grateful for that.
The contrast of our lives is like the black of night vs the brightest of days, but this project and this trust process for creating this truth box for her, healed something in me that has never been touched before. The child in me rose up and screamed… The child in me rose up and screamed,
“I am worthy of that too.”
And the answer came back:
Yes.
Yes, you are.
We all are.
We are all created to love and be loved.
To care and be cared for.
To give love and receive it.
To live in safety and provide safety for others.
That is an epiphany for me. Not because I didn’t “know” it in my head, but because now I know it in my heart.
Through the seasons, through the births and even through death, we are constantly learning. We are constantly discarding lies for truth. Love for hate. Gentleness for abrasion. Generosity for greed. Gratitude for complaining. Hope for sadness.
I love that we are always growing and changing.
It is true pleasure to watch all of my 7 grandkids grow up. But her…Kenzie, it is different.
Precious girl. Protected. Confident. Gentle, yet herself. Kind and full of love. She is becoming. She loves her brothers. Her laugh tickles me inside. She is unabashed. She lives in the moment. She tries new things. She loves. Everything.
I will continue to enjoy my seat in the balcony of her life and say a prayer of gratitude for these opportunities.
If you have ever created something for someone else and found healing for yourself in the process, I would love to hear about it in the comments.
We grow together here.
Blessings until next time!
